Summary: Moiraine's thoughts on the events at the beginning of tEotW.  Songfic to Amy MacDonald's This is the Life

Oh the wind whistles down
The cold dark street tonight
And the people they were dancing to the music vibe
And the boys chase the girls with the curls in their hair
While the shy tormented youth sit way over there
And the songs they get louder
Each one better than before

It was the day before Bel Tine; a cold, unpleasant day more reminiscent of Midwinter, but the people of Emond’s Field were still preparing for the biggest feastday of the year.  Men could hardly be seen behind the huge barrels of ale they carried, and the women bustled around making sure their husbands and sons and brothers were working hard.  Moiraine smiled to herself; it was just like watching the preparations in Tar Valon.  She could remember the distracted novice lessons that she’d sat through, wishing she could be out celebrating instead of being taught weaves that she and Siuan had puzzled out weeks before.  As Accepted, they’d been assigned the task of teaching novices those same boring lessons, although most of the novices had obeyed the ‘no touching the Power unless in the presence of an Aes Sedai’ rule and so were learning weaves new to them.

And you're singing the songs
Thinking this is the life
And you wake up in the morning and your head feels twice the size
Where you gonna go? Where you gonna go?
Where you gonna sleep tonight?

These villagers were quaint, in a rather fascinating way.  Having grown up in the Sun Palace, Moiraine had never had cause to do more than briefly visit her estates, and so village life was alien to her.  It looked simple at first glance, but these people were far from simple peasants.  They were educated to a degree, in that they could read and write reasonably well, and some of the villagers were more accomplished than one might think.  There was a blademaster who had been a commander in the Aiel War, according to the Mayor, a few of the other men had travelled to see the world, and the place was full of girls with the potential to become powerful Aes Sedai.  Combined with three ta’veren boys of the right age, finding the Two Rivers was almost as good as finding the control statues for the Choeden Kal.  Not that they could be used, of course, but in theory… Moiraine shook herself.  She was beginning to sound like a Brown.

Where you gonna sleep tonight?
Where you gonna sleep tonight?

She would let the boys stay for Bel Tine.  While there was danger, pulling them away from the celebrations they had surely been looking forward to for the past year would only serve to make them resent her.  One last day of innocent village bliss, and then she would take them away.  She would find a way to lure them out of their village if it killed her.

So your heading down the road in your taxi for four
And you're waiting outside Jimmy's front door
But nobody's in and nobody's home 'til four
So you're sitting there with nothing to do
Talking about Robert Riger and his motley crew
And where you're gonna go and where you're gonna sleep tonight

But in the end, she couldn’t take the risk.  She had to chance that they would be angry with her for removing them from Emond’s Field, because if she let them stay until Tam al’Thor was well they would very likely be dead.  A dead Dragon was no good to the world; while she would have preferred to persuade them gently – sugar always worked better than a stick, as they said in Andor – she had to chivvy them out of danger.  Only now the danger had started, it wouldn’t stop.

Where you gonna go? Where you gonna go?
Where you gonna sleep tonight?

How long was it since she had first dedicated herself to finding the Dragon Reborn?  Two decades of travelling, of fear and of caution had come to an abrupt end when Moiraine arrived in Emond’s Field.  The nomadic lifestyle she had once craved had proved less fun than she had expected – it would have been nice to spend just one whole year going by her own name rather than using any of the aliases she had created – but Moiraine wondered if she would ever truly enjoy staying in one place again.  Two decades of near-constant travel had ingrained the habit in her; with Siuan the Amyrlin and therefore inaccessible as a friend the White Tower had lost all appeal.  What was the point of living somewhere if you had to pretend that you had never been more than merely aquainted with your ex-lover?

Where you gonna go? Where you gonna go?
Where you gonna sleep tonight?

The presence of the Wisdom rubbed in the fact that Moiraine could not have Siuan – the stubbornness, the refusal to admit defeat and the rash confidence were all there.  If Siuan had been a wilder, Moiraine would be willing to bet that she would have behaved exactly as Nynaeve did.  Seeing such fervent loathing on the face of a girl so similar to Siuan was painful, although Moiraine would never admit it.

Thinking this is the life
And you wake up in the morning and your head feels twice the size
Where you gonna go? Where you gonna go?
Where you gonna sleep tonight?

It had to get better from here.  They were in Baerlon, Min’s ability was still strong and Lan had covered their tracks well.  Tonight they could all relax and enjoy their stay at the inn.  Moiraine could dance and relax as if were Bel Tine, and they could hope that their enemies had been thrown off the trail.  There was nothing wrong, except a nagging feeling that something was going to happen.

Where you gonna sleep tonight?
